Alleghany County Fly Fishing
The fly
fishing in Alleghany County and Sparta NC is an anglers
dream! Blessed with two natural rivers that provide
plenty of sport fish and an abundance of trout streams,
Alleghany County is definitely the one of the best spots
to fish in the NC Blue Ridge Mountains. The county’s
many streams and mountain brooks are generally fed by
the New River which flows throughout the northwestern
border of the county. The New River and its many
tributaries are filled with rainbow trout, brown trout,
smallmouth bass, and even rock bass “redeyes”. In
certain places on the New River in Alleghany County one
can even fish for large big game fish like catfish and
muskellunge fish.
Running through the middle portion of the county is the
Little River, a small tributary of the New River. With
over 18 miles of hatchery supported waters, the Little
River is one of the top places in North Carolina to
trout fish. Be sure to research and have a clear
understanding of all of the North Carolina Wildlife
Commission’s trout fishing regulations.
Parks
in the region also offer some phenomenal fishing in
Alleghany County. At Stone Mountain Park alone there is
more than 17 miles of trout streams to fish and several
of them are trophy catch and release streams. Here you
can fish for rainbow and brown trout that are 30 inches
and longer! Another popular spot nearby, Bullhead Creek,
is a trophy stream that offers trophy fishing in
sections. Anglers pay to fish in one of eight different
“beat” sections of the creek and during that time are
guaranteed exclusive fishing in that part of the stream.
Sections of Bullhead Creek cannot be reserved ahead of
time as they are on a first come first serve basis.
The Blue Ridge Parkway also runs through gorgeous
Alleghany County and is home to some excellent trout
streams. When you fish along the Blue Ridge Parkway you
can enjoy the peaceful solitude of the Blue Ridge
Mountains and their many rivers, streams, and creeks, as
well as the convenient access to some of the best
fishing spots afforded by the Parkway.
