The New River
The New River in Alleghany County NC flows along the Northwestern most border of the county near the Virginia border, creating stunning mountain scenery and phenomenal locations to enjoy fishing and canoeing. As a tributary of the Kanawha River, the New River is approximately 320 miles long and flows through North Carolina, Virginia and parts of West Virginia.

The New River NC is renowned throughout the world as many geologists and researchers consider it to be between 10 million and 360 million years old, predating the formation of the Appalachian Mountain chain which it now runs through. There is some evidence of this as the New River’s waters flow in a south to north course, which is opposite to and against, the southwest to northeast topography of the Appalachian Mountains and the general west to east flow of other area rivers found in Virginia and North Carolina. If the river is indeed this ancient, it could possibly be one of the oldest river in the entire world; second only to the well known Nile River in Egypt.

The best fishing in Alleghany County is typically found in and around the New River. Home to numerous species of freshwater big game fish like smallmouth bass, rainbow and brown trout, walleye, muskellunge, bluegill and even some channel catfish, the New River NC maintains its natural ecology and wildlife flourishes here. Canoeing or kayaking the New River is another popular activity in Alleghany County as its waters are calm and most of the sections of the river in the county have deeper waters where the river becomes a bit wider. There are several outfitters and commercial guide shops that provide equipment, valuable advice, and even guided trips if you are a beginning fisherman or rafter.
