Alleghany County Area Parks
 A
great way to explore parts of the Blue Ridge that are
not as easily accessible by car is to visit one of the
many great state parks in the region. There are several
excellent state parks located in and nearby Alleghany
County and Sparta NC. These parks are excellent places
to enjoy all of your favorite outdoor activities like
hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, and even fishing.
Here we’ve provided a bit of information on some the
great parks to enjoy in and around Alleghany County and
our NC Blue Ridge Mountain region.
Stone Mountain State Park NC in Roaring Gap is one of
Alleghany County’s best known attractions and a great
place to visit. The park’s 600 foot granite dome is a
popular spot for area rock climbers to enjoy, however
you can also enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, and other
activities throughout Stone Mountain State Park. With 20
miles of designated trout waters, and more than 16 miles
of park trails, you’ll never run out of things to do
here.
At New River State Park in nearby Ashe County, you can
enjoy canoeing and fishing in the ancient New River and
hike and camp on the park’s trails. This park is a
wonderful place to see wildlife and enjoy numerous
varieties of endangered native plants. Whitetail deer,
black bears, river otter, and beavers all make their
homes throughout the parks vast expanse of forested
lands and fertile river banks. Several native bird
species are also found throughout the park, and avid
bird watchers will enjoy getting the chance to see some
rare varieties like the black-billed cuckoo, warbling
vireo, and golden-winged warbler. Be sure to enjoy all
of the amenities and beautiful mountain scenery located
throughout the New River State Park.
 Pilot
Mountain State Park is located a bit further away in
neighboring Surry County NC and is the site of the
solitary, 1,400 foot monolith that rises above the
rolling hills of the piedmont below. At its highest
peak, Pilot Mountain is 2,421 feet above sea level and
is truly a sight to see. Hiking, rock climbing, camping,
fishing and canoeing are all great activities to enjoy
at Pilot Mountain State Park and visitors find the
gorgeous mountain scenery to be unparalleled.
In addition to these area parks, the Blue Ridge
Parkway’s vast expanse runs through our beautiful NC
Mountain region and has some really great overlooks and
other places to enjoy outdoor recreation. Be sure to
stop by special Blue Ridge Parkway locations in
Alleghany County like the Cumberland Knob and the Fox
Hunter’s Paradise.
