Both the
New River and the Little River flow through
various parts of Alleghany County and Sparta NC and
there are several spots of each that are perfect for not
only fishing but canoeing, kayaking, tubing and even
whitewater rafting.
 In
Alleghany County, the South and North Forks of the New
River converge and the New River becomes wider and
deeper, allowing you to see more of the river. In
Sparta, the New River’s calm waters wind through the
land and create a phenomenal place to enjoy canoeing.
This part of the New River is also excellent for tubing.
Another great river to canoe in addition to the New
River is the Little River. Flowing directly through the
middle of Alleghany County NC, the Little River creates
some truly serene spots, perfect for a peaceful day of
canoeing.
The New River as it flows near the Virginia border has
some great spots to enjoy white water rafting, and there
are several commercial outfitters and guides in the area
that are happy to lead you on an exciting adventure.
Typically, one can enjoy rafting class II-IV rapids,
however in the spring, off season rafters can get a
bigger rafting experience, enjoying class IV-V rapids.
