 Alleghany
County was created in 1865, when the eastern portion of
Ashe County segmented away and became a separate county.
After the Civil War, Allegheny County experienced little
growth, and over the years it become truly disconnected
from other parts of the Blue Ridge Mountain region, even
earning the reputation of being the “Lost Province” of
North Carolina.
Today, Alleghany County remains very rural, however with
its small towns and friendly, welcoming atmosphere the
county is absolutely connected to other parts of the NC
Blue Ridge Mountains. Known today as the “Unspoiled
Province”, Alleghany County consists of 236 square miles
of well preserved North Carolina mountain land. With a
population of about 10,000 people, Alleghany County is
still largely rural, however its county seat, Sparta is
a bustling small town that has experienced significant
economic growth in the last few years.
 Much
of the county’s residents work in either the education
field or the healthcare profession as the school system
and hospital are major employers in the region. There is
ample opportunity for new businesses and other commerce
to come to the county and in the last few years the town
of Sparta has grown exponentially.
